Motability is the leading car scheme for disabled people who receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners Mobility Supplement. How Does Motability Work?

If you’re disabled, the Motability Scheme can provide you with access to a brand-new car that can be modified to help with your personal situation.

As long as you’re in receipt of the appropriate disability allowance and it has at least 12 months remaining on it, you’ll be eligible for Motability.

Provided you’re good to go, the next step is to choose your vehicle.

At Winchester Motor Company and Garland Motors Aldershot, we’re ŠKODA specialists. This means that some of the finest vehicles on the market are available as part of the scheme, including the Fabia, Scala, Octavia, Superb, Kamiq and Karoq.

ŠKODA manufactures its vehicles with optimal practicality in mind but, with Motability, you can make your car of choice even more comfortable to use. We can modify it so that it’s easy for you to control, for example, with one of three kinds of steering aids. And if you’re a wheelchair, powerchair or scooter user, we can provide you with a simple push-button method of stowing your conveyance aboard the car.

Motability Adaptations

While the Motability Scheme provides the opportunity to exchange your mobility supplement for the lease on a new ŠKODA car from Winchester Motor Group, did you know that it also entitles you to a number of vehicle adaptations completely free of charge? These adaptations can often prove invaluable to your motoring experience, improving access and assisting your driving, depending on your own specific needs. For example:

Driving adaptations: If you’re unable to drive a regular vehicle, selected driving adaptations can be made, such as hand controls in place of foot pedals and steering aids for increased control.

Access adaptations: For those needing to access the vehicle from wheelchairs or scooters, transfer plates, electric hoists, and swivel seats may well prove essential.

Stowage adaptations: Storage space for wheelchairs and scooters can be included through rooftop boxes, while boot hoists can also be fitted.

Do you qualify for a Motability Car?

If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS), you’re eligible to join the Motability Scheme.

There is no upper age limit. As long as you receive one of the allowances, you are eligible for the Scheme. Parents or guardians can order a car on behalf of a child aged three years and above, who is receiving HRMC DLA.

To lease a car through Motability, you must have at least 12 months’ award length remaining. Only the Higher Rate Mobility Component is used. Other parts of the DLA are not affected. Unfortunately the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through Motability.
